Running for views, swims and waffles:

This tour takes you through some of Norway’s most beautiful scenery, with a varied mix of running tours, from peak runs rewarding you with majestic views from the summit, valley runs to crashing waterfalls, and even a run for waffles!

Interspersed with the daily runs are a host of other activities to provide extra variety and allow you time to recoup your energy – the week includes a half-day tour with electric mountain bikes, an afternoon introduction to outdoor skills such as fire making and foraging and an optional whitewater rafting trip to end the week.

Along the way you will be staying at a series of cosy local mountain lodges, all with their own character and charm. Hot tubs, spas and swimming pools are available at some of the overnights to get those tired legs back into shape for the next day’s adventure!

Your main luggage will be transferred between the overnight locations, meaning you need to take with you only what you need during the day – a packed lunch, water, and some extra layers.

Is it for me?

  • Fixed date tours are suitable for solo travellers or guests travelling with one or more companions. Prices are based on 2 persons sharing. Please see under “Prices” for details of single supplement if solo traveller or requiring single occupancy.
  • For fixed date tours, you should at minimum be able to run 10-20km/day in mixed terrain and weather conditions. Terrain varies from steep, rocky mountain paths to flatter forest tracks.
  • For private tours, a greater degree of flexibility to vary level of challenge is possible.

Day 1
Day 1: Arrival

Summary: Arrival to Otta train station for transfer to your accommodation. Accommodation: Fagerli Nature Lodge.

Travel by train to Oslo to Otta, from where transfers are included (approx. 25 mins) to your accommodation.

From Oslo Gardermoen (OSL) airport, there are regular connections departing 09.59 arriving Otta 13.27, 14.29 arriving 17.34 or 16.29 arriving 19.40 (timings and services may vary depending on dates).

If staying in Oslo city, travel from Oslo S (Oslo central station) rather than the airport.

If you have time and energy after your trip, you’re welcome to do a short self-guided walk or run in the afternoon:

– To the mountain pasture at Fagerli (total 4km).

– To Fagerlifossen waterfall (total 1.5km)

At 19.00 the group will assemble for dinner and an introductory welcome meeting with your guide.

Your accomodation tonight is an old farmhouse from the 18th century, now given a new lease of life as a nature lodge.

Day 2
Day 2: A Run With A View (Vardhøe viewpoint)

Summary: Distance: 12km; Height gain: 650m; Time: 4-5 hours; Accommodation: Øigardseter (luggage transferred).

Today you’re aiming for the viewpoint at Vardhøe, distance approx. 12km, height gain 650m. The run should take around 4-5 hours.

Following a leisurely breakfast (available 08.00-09.30), get ready for your run! Make a packed lunch from the breakfast buffet to sustain you during the day.

Please ensure you pack your luggage, taking with you only what you can run with for the day, and be ready to start from the lodge at 10.00. You’ll be out until around 15.00, when you reach your next accommodation.

Today’s route takes you along the historic Skogsetrin trail via Storrusten.

Reaching the viewpoint at Vardhøe, you can see down to the mountain village of Høvringen and the area you’ll be exploring in the coming days.

You continue your run towards Øigardseter, your accommodation for the night, a lovely mountain lodge offering hotel-standard accommodation on the border of the Rondane National Park.

There’s chance to relax (or a walk if you still have energy to burn!) before dinner at 19.00.

Day 3
Day 3: A Run With A Swim (Lake Harrtjern)

Summary: Distance: 15km; Height gain: 480m; Time: 3-4 hours; Accommodation: Puttenseter (luggage transferred).

Today you will be covering around 15km with a height gain of 480m (estimated time 3-4 hours) as you run to Lake Harrtjern, a beautiful mountain lake ideal for a “refreshing”(!) dip, and on to tonight’s accommodation at Puttenseter.

08.00-09.30: Breakfast. As before, please make packed lunch from the breakfast buffet, have your luggage packed and be ready to start by 10.00.

Your run begins over the peak of Anaripigg and to the lake, before continuing to reach Puttenseter around 14.00.

As it’s a relatively short outing today, the day’s activities are not over yet! In the afternoon, you will have an introduction to Norwegian outdoor living, with instruction and advice on camping, making a campfire, outdoor cooking and foraging foods from the nature around you.

Day 4
Day 4: E-biking, Foraging and Fishing

Summary: Distance: 12km; Height gain: 460m; Time: 3-4 hours; Accommodation: Smuksjøseter (luggage transferred).

A break from running today! After breakfast 08.00-09.30, you meet at 10.00 as normal, this time taking to electric mountain bikes towards your next accommodation at Smuksjøseter.

Total distance today is around 12km with 460m of height gain, with the bike tour taking 3-4 hours.

Your route will take you via Kampen, including an optional ascent to the viewpoint at Kampen at Formokampen.

You have a challenge to complete during your trip, using your knowledge from the course the day before – to collect three types of edible plants or berries for tonight’s dinner!

You finish e-biking around 13.00, arriving at Smuksjøseter, a family-run mountain lodge, where your fishing guide will meet you with gear to try your hand at mountain trout fishing in the lake of Høvringsvatnet.

Tonight’s dinner at 18.00 is cooked outdoors over open fire – hopefully using the fish you have caught from the lake and the foods collected during your bike tour.

A perfect end to the day is a soak in the outdoor hot tub at the lodge, enjoying the long evening light and beautiful views.

Day 5
Day 5: Peak Run to Bråkdalsbelgen

Summary: Distance: 17km; Height gain: 880m; Time: 5-6 hours; Accommodation: Smuksjøseter.

Breakfast 08.00-09.30 and meeting at 10.00 – it’s back to running today! You don’t need to pack your main luggage today, as you will return to the lodge for a second night.

You’ll be running/hiking to Bråkdalsbelgen, a stunning viewpoint and one of the principal peaks of Rondane National Park, returning to the lodge at Smuksjøseter around 16.00.

Total distance today is around 17km with a height gain of 880m. Today’s trip should take around 5-6 hours.

The afternoon is an opportunity to take it easy and soak up the mountain surroundings, or of course there are always self-guided runs or walks available!

Dinner is served at 19.00.

Day 6
Day 6: Waffle Run and the Peer Gynt Cabin

Summary: Distance: 15km; Height gain: 150m; Time: 3-4 hours; Accommodation: Rondane Høyfjellshotell (luggage transferred).

Breakfast 08.00-09.30, meet at 10.00. You’ll be moving on again today, so pack your main luggage for transfer!

A lovely varied run today, distance around 15km, height gain 150m, taking around 3-4 hours.

From wide mountain views above the tree line, to the forested valleys of the river Ula dotted with waterfalls, today is a today to really enjoy the beauty of the Rondane area.

Every runner needs a treat as reward for all your hard work, and at the halfway point you find the Peer Gynt cabin, serving, according to locals, the world’s most delicious waffles! You will have a chance to judge for yourself and decide! (additional cost for waffles payable locally).

Around 14.00 you reach Rondane Høyfjellshotell, your accommodation for the night, a traditional mountain hotel which offers facilities including swimming pool and, if you have some tired muscles which need soothing, spa treatments (additional cost payable locally if you would like treatments).

Dinner at 19.00.

Day 7
Day 7: Waterfall Run to Brudesløret (with optional whitewater rafting)

Summary: Distance: 8.5km; Height gain: 190m; Time: 2.5-4 hours; Accommodation: Rondane Høyfjellshotell.

Breakfast 08.00-09.30 and meet at 10.00. You will be returning to Rondane Høyfjellshotell tonight, so there’s no need to pack your main luggage.

After the challenges of the previous days, you’ll take things a little easier today for your last day of running, covering 8.5km with a height gain of 190m, taking around 2.5-4 hours depending on options chosen.

From the hotel, you run to the beautiful waterfall at Brudesløret. If you have energy to spare, there’s the option to return home via a viewpoint at Gråhøe.

Returning around 12.30 or a little later, you can either choose to relax for the afternoon or take self-guided trips from the hotel, or for thrill seekers, choose a whitewater rafting trip as optional extra.

Norway is a wonderful destination for whitewater rafting on the river Sjoa, and this provides a wonderful way to round off your week in the Rondane mountains.

Day 8
Day 8: Departure

Summary: Transfer to Otta train station for departure.

Breakfast 08.00-09.30 followed by departure.

Transfers are included (approx. 20 mins) to Otta train station for onward travel.

Train connections to Oslo Airport normally leave 11.29 arriving 14.32 or 16.27 arriving 19.33.

Dates 2020:

Fixed dates: 16th-23rd August 2020; 6th-13th September 2020.

These tour dates are open to anyone fulfilling the running ability requirements (min. age 16). Total minimum 4 persons required for tours to be guaranteed to run.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What training should I do to prepare for the tour?

You should do a variety of runs of at least 10km in varied terrain and in different weather conditions/temperatures. During the tour you should be prepared for some days which are shorter but steeper and others which are longer but flatter.

It is important to practise running using the pack you are planning to use and carrying what you would be intending take with you on the tour days (water, lunch, spare clothing, etc).

What kind of running shoes do I need?

Paths can be uneven and rocky, so trail running shoes with good trip are essential. Conditions may be wet, so waterproof shoes such as GoreTex may be useful.

What will I need to carry with me during the runs?

In the Norwegian mountains, it can be four seasons in one day, so you should have a small backpack (approx. 20l) with you to carry jacket, hat/beanie, Buff, light gloves, etc, as well as food and water for the day. A good trail running backpack can be suitable provided you have sufficient space.

How can I refill drinking water during the runs?

You will normally bring all water with you for each day’s run but there may be opportunities to refill at streams, etc, along the route. The water in the area is very clean and may be drinkable untreated – please check with your guide. You are of course also welcome to bring a small portable water filter.

Do I need to bring hiking poles?

Hiking poles can be useful for steeper sections, so if you have these and are used to running with them, we recommend you bring them.

Why is Rondane National Park special?

Rondane is Norway’s oldest National Park, established in 1962 and today covering around 1000 sq. km. With regions both above and below the tree line, it’s home to Norway’s largest herd of wild reindeer, and offers beautiful landscapes varying from forest, rivers and waterfalls at lower altitudes to colourful heathland and dramatic mountains as you climb. Rondane’s highest peak is Rondeslottet, at 2178m.

In brief:

  • Fly to Oslo for train (3.5 hours) to Tampere.

You will be met at the train station for transfer (approx. 25 mins) to your accommodation. Please let us know your arrival and departure times in advance.

  • Go to Norwegian train website www.vy.no
  • If necessary, choose “English” at the very bottom of the page for information in English.
  • Choose “Oslo S” (Oslo Central station, if coming from Oslo city) or “Oslo Lufthavn” (if coming from Oslo Gardermoen OSL airport) as your start point and “Otta” as your destination.

You may find there are more connections from central Oslo than from the airport. If you need to travel into Oslo city for onward connections, or if you are spending extra night(s) in Oslo before your tour:
